Maine gubernatorial election, 2014

The 2014 Maine gubernatorial election took place on November 4, 2014, to elect the Governor of Maine. Incumbent Republican Governor Paul LePage ran for re-election to a second term in office, against sitting congressman from the second district, Mike Michaud, and second-place finisher from the 2010 gubernatorial election, attorney Eliot Cutler.
LePage was initially considered vulnerable in this race, due to persistent approval ratings below 50%. The consensus among ''The Cook Political Report'',〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Ratings )〕 ''Governing'' and ''The Rothenberg Political Report''〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Ratings )〕 was that the race was a "tossup" and ''Daily Kos Elections''〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Daily Kos Elections gubernatorial race ratings: Initial ratings for 2013-14 )〕 and ''Sabato's Crystal Ball''〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Ratings )〕 rated the race as "lean Democratic".
At 12:04 AM on November 5, the Bangor Daily News declared that Paul LePage had won re-election to a second term.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Gov. Paul LePage wins a second term; Michaud concedes )
==Background==
After a close three-way election in 2010, Republican Paul LePage, the Mayor of Waterville, was elected Governor with 38% of the vote. He beat Independent candidate Eliot Cutler, who won 36%, and Democrat Libby Mitchell, the President of the Maine Senate, who won 19%. Republican gubernatorial nominees in Maine have failed to win a majority of the vote in 12 consecutive cycles over the last 50+ years – the longest such GOP streak in the nation. No governor has been popularly elected with less than 40 percent of the vote in two consecutive cycles in U.S. history.
